Bridger's $30.5M Quarter, Edison's $775M in Eaton Checks, and a $768B FAIR Plan Book

By Jake Kostecki · ~4 min read

→ Start here: Bridger Aerospace's $30.5M quarter — the clearest read yet on how aerial-suppression dollars are pricing mid-season.

The money moving through wildfire this week runs from the flight line to the courthouse. Bridger Aerospace banked a $30.5M second quarter and reaffirmed full-year guidance of $135–145M, its backlog anchored by a $58M Texas A&M Forest Service award for three King Air 360s. Edison International extended roughly $775M to Eaton-fire claimants while its core profit jumped 59%. And California's FAIR Plan — the insurer of last resort — now carries a $768B book, nine ZIP codes holding $44B of it, as a 29.1% rate hike lands Oct 15.

Sacramento is where the biggest number gets decided. Governor Newsom's utility-liability package — a $150,000 cap on non-economic damages, curbs on insurer subrogation, the $21B Wildfire Fund as backstop — is racing an Aug 31 adjournment with still no final bill text, against UCLA's $24–45B Eaton loss estimate. Meanwhile wildfire cat-bond issuance hit a near-record $5.18B and Perimeter Solutions bought its way into fire-detection for $120M. Follow the money.

THE WIRE

CONTRACTOR MONEY · via Fire & Safety Journal

Bridger Aerospace banks a $30.5M quarter and reaffirms $135–145M guidance — Aug 6–7: Bridger Aerospace (BAER) posted Q2 revenue of $30.5M and reaffirmed FY26 guidance of $135–145M revenue and $55–60M adjusted EBITDA. Its named backlog includes a $58M Texas A&M Forest Service award for three King Air 360s and two 160-day USFS task orders worth "at least $30M" in guaranteed Super Scooper standby. The clearest public read on how aerial-suppression contracts are pricing this season — a direct comp for anyone selling flight hours or standby to federal and state agencies.

PUBLIC · via Edison International

Edison's core profit jumps 59% as it extends ~$775M to Eaton claimants — Jul 30: Edison International (EIX) reported Q2 core EPS of $1.54 (up 59%) and reaffirmed FY guidance of $5.90–$6.20; it has now extended roughly $775M to Eaton-fire claimants and proposed a $2.5B RAMP risk-mitigation program for 2029–2032, closing on the $1B accounting threshold that would force a formal loss estimate. The cash going out the door on Eaton is now quantified — the pace toward that $1B line is the number EIX equity is watching.

INSURANCE MONEY · via KQED

California's FAIR Plan is now a $768B book — and nine ZIP codes hold $44B of it — Aug 12: FAIR Plan exposure reached $768B as of June (up ~250% since Sept 2022), with nine ZIP codes concentrating ~$44B (7%) of liability; the approved 29.1% average rate hike takes effect Oct 15 for 675,000+ policyholders. A $768B book with that much geographic concentration sets the base for the next assessment on admitted carriers — a cost every California homeowner insurer will share.

LIABILITY MONEY · via CalMatters

Newsom's utility-liability package races the Aug 31 clock — Aug 12: the administration's eleventh-hour outline would cap non-economic damages at $150,000 for some victims, curb insurer subrogation and add a "fast-pay" claims program, backstopped by the $21B Wildfire Fund — with UCLA pegging Eaton losses at $24–45B and still no final bill text 16 days from adjournment. The single biggest lever on who eats the Eaton/Palisades bill — insurers, plaintiff firms and utility shareholders all have billions riding on the final language.

PUBLIC · via StockTitan

Mercury's profit jumps 58% — and its wildfire reserves keep creeping — Aug 4: Mercury General (MCY) reported Q2 net income of $263.5M (up 58%) with the combined ratio improving to 89.9%, but booked ~$80M of adverse reserve development on the Jan 2025 Palisades/Eaton fires; Verisk pegs the two fires' insured losses at $28–35B. Eighteen months on, the California wildfire tail is still growing — anyone underwriting or reinsuring CA homeowners should assume loss picks keep drifting up.

DEAL MONEY · via Perimeter Solutions

Perimeter posts $213.8M in sales and buys into fire-detection for $120M — Jul 31: Perimeter Solutions (PRM) reported Q2 net sales of $213.8M (a net loss of $181.6M) and closed its ~$120M all-cash acquisition of Monaco Enterprises to expand its Fire Safety monitoring segment; shares rose ~15.6% on the print. The Phos-Chek retardant near-monopoly is redeploying margin into detection and monitoring — a tell on where the suppression-adjacent public play expands next.

CAT BOND MONEY · via Artemis

Wildfire cat bond issuance closes on a record at $5.18B — Aug 3: wildfire-exposed catastrophe-bond issuance reached $5.183B YTD, closing on 2025's $5.55B full-year record, with 20 series in the first half and spreads still tightening into peak season. Capital markets are absorbing wildfire risk at record scale — cheap, plentiful protection for sponsors like the FAIR Plan, thinner margins for ILS funds.

UTILITY MONEY · via Artemis

LADWP terms out $100M of wildfire risk in the bond market — Jul 2: the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power priced its fourth cat bond — a $100M "123 Lights Re" 2026-1 deal — at the 9% low end of guidance, a ~3-year county-weighted industry-loss cover running through Aug 2029. A public California utility is offloading fire risk to capital markets, not just reinsurers — and getting better pricing than last year, a template other utilities will copy.

GRANT MONEY · via Hawai'i DLNR

Hawai'i cuts $1.8M in checks to eight community wildfire projects — Jul 29: Hawai'i's DLNR awarded $1.8M across eight organizations — several at the $300K cap (ʻĀina Alliance–Kauaʻi, West Kohala Wildfire Alliance, Kailapa–Hawaiʻi Island, Waiohuli Homesteaders–Maui) — for hazardous-fuels reduction, defensible space and emergency access ahead of peak season. Named payees doing defensible-space and fuels work are exactly the subcontract and supply targets for anyone selling mitigation services in the Islands.

PRIVATE GRANT MONEY · via California Fire Foundation

A $13.8M foundation pool is about to drop — with no Grants.gov equivalent — the California Fire Foundation's Prop 4 grant ($13.8M, awards up to $1M, no match) still reads "application period to be announced Fall 2026." Foundation money like this — and FM Global's quarterly fire-prevention grants, next cutoff Sep 30 — sits outside the federal system entirely. The moat money — foundation, insurer and utility grants with no Grants.gov listing — is where prepared applicants win uncontested; queue up before the window opens.

MONEY LEAVING · via FEMA

The federal mitigation window stays shut as fire grants close for the cycle — FEMA's FY25 AFG, SAFER and FP&S slates all closed June 22 (FP&S alone was $32.4M across ~100 awards up to $1.5M), BRIC remains stalled, and USDA has posted no 2026 Community Wildfire Defense Grant round — leaving emergency suppression, not mitigation, as the live federal money. Until the fall NOFOs post, the checks flow to on-the-line agencies and contractors, not planners — a gap mitigation operators have to bridge with state and private money.

THE NUMBER

~$775M

What Southern California Edison has now extended to Eaton-fire claimants — up from ~$750M a week earlier — as it closes on the $1B threshold that would force a formal loss estimate. Source: Edison International Q2 2026 results, Jul 30, 2026.

Checks written recently: Southern California Edison → Eaton claimants, ~$775M extended to date (Q2, Jul 30). Texas A&M Forest Service → Bridger Aerospace, $58M for three King Air 360s. Hawai'i DLNR → eight community orgs, $1.8M total, several at the $300K cap (Jul 29). Perimeter Solutions → Monaco Enterprises, ~$120M cash (closed Jul 30).

Awardee lists to watch (chase subcontracts): BLM's $3.5M fuels round (closes Aug 28) seeds a fall list. CAL FIRE Tribal Wildfire Resilience ($10M, closes Sep 8) and Colorado FRWRM ($7.04M, closes Oct 8) seed Q1 2027. California Fire Foundation Prop 4 ($13.8M) — window could drop any day this fall.

THE BOARD — the wildfire economy's wanted ads

Hiring signal of the week: Gridware — the grid-monitoring hardware startup built to catch faults before they spark fires — has 26 open roles live on its board, including a Director of Business Development, Central US (remote) and a Customer Success Manager alongside RF, firmware and ML engineering seats. A 26-req wave with a dedicated Central-US BD hire tells you Gridware is scaling commercially beyond California into the broader utility market — where the detection and hardening contracts get won.
